We are please to announce the Cresco Cares 2025 Charity of the Year: MIST
In October 2021, just before his 50th birthday, beloved Calgarian Mike McClay died by suicide, leaving his friends and family questioning if there was something they could have done to prevent the tragedy. Seeking answers, they turned to the University of Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) to establish the Mental Health Initiative for Stress and Trauma (MIST), which studies the effects of emotional stress and physical trauma on the brain. MIST honours Mike’s legacy by advancing neuroscience research and destigmatizing mental health to help save lives. The program quickly gained support, with Community Champions contributing generously during UCalgary’s 2022 Giving Day campaign, raising over $300,000. Thanks to these early supporters, MIST surpassed $1 million in its first year, leading to significant milestones such as appointing Dr. Matthew Hill as the first MIST Chair. Now in its third year, the program has raised nearly $5 million, halfway to its $10 million goal to fund clinical trials.
MIST continues to expand its impact, fostering connections between research disciplines and treatment approaches, raising awareness, and empowering individuals to take charge of their mental health. Cresco Cares, the philanthropic arm of Cresco, is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for this important cause. To learn more or make a donation, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dZBCuBGf
