Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s book,\u00a0Value(s)<\/em>\u00a0argues that how we invest our capital is the clearest expression of the values we actually hold. In his recent ethics disclosure, Canadians got a rare glimpse into both his investment acumen and his values.<\/p>\n

The biggest bombshell? It\u2019s not the cheap \u201cgotcha\u201d that he owns fossil fuel and mining companies like Canadian Natural Resources and Teck. The real shocker is that the man who once helped safeguard Canada\u2019s Big Six Banks now has\u00a0zero<\/strong>\u00a0personal investment exposure to them.<\/p>\n

          What Canadian Investors Can Learn from a Central Banker’s Portfolio<\/span><\/h2>\n

          I\u2019m a big fan of Carney\u2019s approach. Long-time readers know I\u2019ve questioned the wisdom of blindly overweighting Canadian bank stocks. Even so, I wouldn\u2019t personally recommend a 0% allocation. In fairness, Carney may already have significant exposure to Canadian financials through Brookfield Asset Management, which he once ran. Without greater transparency, we can\u2019t say for sure. The inclusion of private fintech disruptors like Stripe and Adyen certainly suggests a deliberate posture\u2014less a bet on Canada\u2019s past and more a portfolio aimed at its future.<\/p>\n

          Whatever your politics, Mark Carney\u2019s credentials are hard to ignore: former central banker, Goldman Sachs alum, and CEO of Brookfield.<\/p>\n

          That makes his investment disclosure all the more revealing, not for its politics, but for what it quietly says about risk, opportunity, and conviction.<\/p>\n

          This isn\u2019t a placeholder portfolio. It\u2019s a globally diversified bet on disruption, decarbonization, and the future\u2014not the past.<\/p>\n

          For Canadian investors nearing or in retirement, the lesson is clear: don\u2019t confuse patriotism with portfolio strategy. Or values with conviction. The world is bigger than the TSX and the future won\u2019t look like the past.<\/p>\n
