The Inspiration of Gothic Architecture<\/span><\/h2>\n

Soaring heights, emphasized by tall narrow windows dematerialize stone walls and draw visitors to the story told in the stained glass.\u00a0 The fusion of liturgy and architecture found its first expression at the Basilica of St. Denis, consecrated in 1144.\u00a0 Inside its cloistered spaces, the local faithful marvelled at the miraculous\u00a0spans, witnessing heaven on\u00a0earth.\u00a0 The stained glass told the story of faith and that story was housed in the double lancet window (shown below with an oculus\u00a0top window).

Understanding the Double Lancet Window<\/span><\/h2>\n

For clarity, here is an elevation of\u00a0 two double lancet windows with oculus\u00a0details.\u00a0 Can you see the two lance-like smaller windows contained in the larger overall frame?<\/p>\n

The language\u00a0of gothic architecture was light, the syntax was the double\u00a0lancet window and the letters were beautiful stained glass.\u00a0 Together they told the story of faith.\u00a0 As you might expect, there is a theological significance behind the syntax.\u00a0 The two “lance-like” interior lites are housed within a larger frame – neatly expressing the notion of the Trinity.<\/p>\n

A Personal Connection to the Architecture<\/span><\/h2>\n

I studied St. Denis for my architecture thesis and I continue to marvel at gothic cathedrals.\u00a0 Perhaps that’s why when Briana asked me to construct a backdrop for the stage of the wedding I immediately thought of a series of gothic window frames – a double lancet in the middle with single lancet frames on either side.\u00a0 I’m drawn to the spiritual and symbolic meaning of two individuals (the adjoining frames) joining together in the center double lancet, “two into one”.<\/p>\n

Construction Challenges Ahead<\/span><\/h2>\n

It sounded simple enough.\u00a0 Now that I’m into the construction process I’m beginning to wonder!\u00a0 I’ll update you on the final image – here’s a sneak peek at what I’ve built so far – wish me luck!<\/p>\n

Gothic Architecture’s Message of Communication<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ultimately, Gothic architecture is about communication and communion.\u00a0 In that sense, these emails have a bit of “the Gothic” in them.\u00a0 I write to communicate ideas about finance and to spend a little time together with you, during your busy weeks.<\/p>\n

Brutalism vs. Gothic: A Stark Contrast<\/span><\/h2>\n

If Gothic architecture is about communication and communion, Brutalist architecture (yes, that’s a thing) is about silence and power.\u00a0 The photo below of the Birmingham Public Library is a great example of its foreboding coldness.<\/p>\n

The juxtaposition between Gothic and Brutalism is as stark as night and day.\u00a0 Isn’t it ironic that in the information age, when you might expect the open exchange of ideas, (Gothic)\u00a0instead we have an unexpected orthodoxy of thought and expression (Brutalism)?\u00a0 The current situation reminds me of the stories in the former Yugoslavia and East Germany where citizens were required to register and have a license to own a typewriter!\u00a0 I suppose authorities really do think the pen is mightier than the sword.<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead with Communication and Connection<\/span><\/h2>\n

As we look forward to another new year together, I want to underscore my resolve to continue to communicate my thoughts.\u00a0 I was struck when delivering our holiday gifts how many of you encouraged me to continue writing these notes.\u00a0 I’m so glad you enjoy them!\u00a0 Please feel free to share them.<\/p>\n
