It&#8217;s what you know for sure that just ain&#8217;t so.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0attributed to Mark Twain<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re a confident species &#8211; even in the face of evidence to the contrary!\u00a0 Consider this short list of things we knew for sure that just weren&#8217;t so:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>butter is bad for you &#8211; eat margarine\u00a0instead<\/li>\n<li>eggs will give you high cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>the low fat diet is better for heart health<\/li>\n<li>Iraq had weapons of mass destruction<\/li>\n<li>Y2K was going to cause\u00a0computers to crash<\/li>\n<li>COVID couldn&#8217;t have come from a lab leak<\/li>\n<li>cracking your knuckles will lead to arthritis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-583\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/food-groups.jpg\" alt=\"food groups\" width=\"800\" height=\"805\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/food-groups.jpg 800w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/food-groups-298x300.jpg 298w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/food-groups-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/food-groups-768x773.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In my field, there is a pervasive false belief that when the stock market hits all-time highs investors should sell.\u00a0 I think the confusion comes from a misinterpretation of the aphorism to &#8220;buy low and sell high&#8221;.\u00a0 This confusion creates anxiety for investors and deprives us of the enjoyment\u00a0of bull markets.\u00a0 I say life is too short not to enjoy the ride &#8211; especially of bull markets.\u00a0 Meb Faber of Cambria Investment agrees.<\/p>\n<p>Meb recently wrote a remarkable paper illustrating that buying (or holding onto) stocks so long as they are trading within 5% of all time highs (and switching into bonds otherwise) generates almost all of the upside of the stock market since 1926 with less than 1\/2 the downside!\u00a0 Here are the summary statistics from his paper:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-586\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/all-time-high.jpg\" alt=\"all-time-high\" width=\"800\" height=\"743\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/all-time-high.jpg 800w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/all-time-high-300x279.jpg 300w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/all-time-high-768x713.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>source:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambriainvestments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Cambria-AllTimeHighs.pdf?utm_source=theideafarm.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=investing-at-all-time-highs\">https:\/\/www.cambriainvestments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Cambria-AllTimeHighs.pdf?utm_source=theideafarm.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=investing-at-all-time-highs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His paper goes on to document the same reality for other asset classes as well.\u00a0 Turns out that buying at all time highs is actually a pretty good idea!\u00a0 Then Faber illustrates an even more compelling idea &#8211; holding an equally weighted portfolio of these various asset classes so long as they are within 5% of their highs for the past 12 months (otherwise holding bonds).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-587\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Equity-Curve.jpg\" alt=\"Equity Curve\" width=\"800\" height=\"851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Equity-Curve.jpg 800w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Equity-Curve-282x300.jpg 282w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Equity-Curve-768x817.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pretty impressive right?\u00a0 Faber is illustrating an idea that has been around since the 1960&#8217;s.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called trend following.\u00a0 I&#8217;m bringing it to your attention because in recent weeks we&#8217;ve seen new All-Time Highs in several important asset classes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gold<\/li>\n<li>US Stocks (SPX, Nasdaq, Dow)<\/li>\n<li>German Stocks (DAX)<\/li>\n<li>French Stocks (CAC40)<\/li>\n<li>Europe and Far East (EFA)<\/li>\n<li>Bitcoin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To be clear, Meb isn&#8217;t offering a prediction\u00a0that stocks will continue to rise, only that holding stocks when they are within 5% of 12 month highs is a time tested approach to both growing our portfolios and reducing the losses along the way.\u00a0 Like all systematic approaches to investing, trend following offers simple solutions that require relentless discipline to enact and can have long periods of underperformance.\u00a0 It may be simple &#8211;
