Spring Edition \u2013 Financial Markets Blossom in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-720\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Grass.jpg\" alt=\"Grass\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Grass.jpg 800w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Grass-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Grass-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Grass-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery blade of grass has its own angel bending over it, whispering, \u201cGrow, grow.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2015 the Talmud<\/p>\n<p>Enclosed, insulated and protected, the dormant material receives a long anticipated signal from the outside world &#8211; &#8220;warmth&#8221;.\u00a0 First a trickle, then a rush of nutrients, water and carbohydrates prime the ancient machine.\u00a0 As the cells absorb the elixir of life they swell, creating pressure and tension on the protective walls that once protected but now imprison the new life.\u00a0 Pressure builds until one spring\u00a0day, the bud walls rupture and the\u00a0 flower bursts into view expanding\u00a0as much as 16 times by weight in a single\u00a0day.\u00a0 Repeated billions of times over, spring arrives in the nation&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just flowers that respond to the imperative to grow.\u00a0 Economies, countries, communities, and yes, individuals all have a primordial\u00a0voice whispering &#8220;Grow, grow&#8221;.\u00a0 Can you hear it?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>The Market Cycle: From Deep Freeze to Blooming<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Recently, financial markets have responded to the call.\u00a0 In 2022, interest rates spiked, blanketing\u00a0global stock markets in deep snow and freezing investments. In 2023, a thaw occurred as rates peaked creating a warming trend.\u00a0 Now in 2024, spring has returned once again as many markets have blossomed to record new all-time highs.\u00a0 North American, European and many emerging markets have now fully recovered and are making new all-time highs (or close to).\u00a0 Gold and Bitcoin have also joined in the party.<\/p>\n<p>Policy-makers, CEO&#8217;s and governments aren&#8217;t whispering &#8211; they&#8217;re shouting, &#8220;Grow, Grow!&#8221;\u00a0 Investors once again have the sun on their face and the wind at their back.\u00a0 All of this is good news, but many investors are confused.\u00a0 Like the Looney Tunes cartoon character, Marvin the Martian, they were expecting &#8220;an earth shattering ka-boom!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-719\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Marvin-the-Martian.jpg\" alt=\"Marvin the Martian\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Marvin-the-Martian.jpg 800w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Marvin-the-Martian-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Marvin-the-Martian-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/05\/Marvin-the-Martian-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Marvin the Martian &#8211; surprised.\u00a0 Dall-E<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>The Resilience of &#8220;Il Gigantes&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Recession worries, layoff notices and deficits were supposed to create an &#8220;earth shattering ka-boom!&#8221;\u00a0 Instead, these risks have been digested by financial markets and used to fuel the new bull markets.\u00a0 Who could have foreseen this?\u00a0 We did!\u00a0 Recall that in October we wrote about Il Gigantes (the marble stone that David was carved from), when stocks had their final tumble in October, I wrote this:<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Portfolio Managers and Investors Have to See What Others Miss<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s no secret that rising interest rates have negatively impacted utilities, banks and telecom\u00a0companies in Canada.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve catalogued in prior issues just how far some of these giants have fallen.\u00a0 Instead of recounting the losses, let&#8217;s consider how these Il Gigantes have responded to prior periods of steep losses.\u00a0 To do that, I used software that I&#8217;ve had custom built to examine how the share prices have performed in the two years following prior periods of weakness.\u00a0 These Average 2-year Returns exclude the high current dividends these securities are paying.\u00a0 To be clear, we can&#8217;t be certain that history will repeat &#8211;
