A Liberal stronghold for 30 years has flipped Conservative creating shockwaves &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/bigmail.wellington-altus.ca\/t\/c\/1ef0d5a0-1e19-49f1-9fdf-dc283aacbb03\/00000000-0000-4000-8000-000000000001\">source<\/a>. From an investor&#8217;s perspective this outcome was predictable. Consider the following short list of issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Canadian standard of living has been stagnant from 2017 while the US standard of living has increased more than 10% &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/bigmail.wellington-altus.ca\/t\/c\/a85ba30f-eb52-419d-a107-83c0334ecf79\/00000000-0000-4000-8000-000000000001\">source<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Canadian non-residential investment per person has collapsed to decade lows.<\/li>\n<li>Because of the collapse in investment, productivity per person has also fallen &#8211; this was described as Canada&#8217;s Achilles heel by Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem in a recent speech &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/bigmail.wellington-altus.ca\/t\/c\/8a56cc71-10a9-41ec-a9a6-c6162ffba2fb\/00000000-0000-4000-8000-000000000001\">source.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The US Stock Market vs. Canada: A 2:1 Outperformance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The combination of the above has resulted in the\u00a0US stock market outperforming Canada&#8217;s by more than 2:1 over the past 10 years!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-976 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/07\/Y-Charts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/07\/Y-Charts.jpg 800w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/07\/Y-Charts-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/evansfamilywealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/205\/2024\/07\/Y-Charts-768x305.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>source: YCharts.com<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong>Crisis Worsened by Tax Changes Pushing Talent to the US:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I share Macklem&#8217;s and the voters of Toronto-St. Paul&#8217;s concerns. This is a crisis. Increases in capital gains tax further worsens the problem. Top earning Canadians paying more tax than almost anywhere in North America. That&#8217;s a bad combination for incumbent governments. If these poll results are indicative of a trend, then it appears Canadians are finally demanding better of their leaders. The road to recovery for Canada will be long. In the meantime, what should investors do? Answer: diversify!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #555555\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;color: #555555\">Avoid Home Country Bias<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #555555\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;color: #555555\">Clearly Canadians need to avoid over-concentrating on underperforming Canadian markets.\u00a0 Home country bias refers to the tendency citizens have to hold most of their investments in their home country. This is a costly mistake. ETF giant Vanguard recommends Canadians have a maximum of 30% of their equity allocation in Canada and 70% in international stocks &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/bigmail.wellington-altus.ca\/t\/c\/fbc89088-216e-47e3-82e9-214ede443713\/00000000-0000-4000-8000-000000000001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #28919c\">source<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;color: #555555\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;color: #555555\">The Good News is that it has never been easier for Canadian investors to diversify. My clients have been ahead of this trend for years now, but the recent deterioration requires us to reassess whether we have done enough to protect ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #555555\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;color: #555555\">What Could Change the Outlook for Canada?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #555555\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;line-height: 12.6pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;color: #555555\">As a patriotic Canadian, I have to believe that we will eventually solve these problems. We are a country with almost unimaginable natural resources in a world in desperate need of them. At present, investors are glum and capital is moving out of our country. Importantly, these policies have pushed down the Loonie and seen bets against it reach all-time highs.
