The benefit aims to reduce poverty and provide greater financial security for those who may face additional living costs related to their disability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is Eligible?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for the CDB, an individual must:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be between the ages of 18 and 64<\/li>\n<li>be approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)<\/li>\n<li>have filed their most recent federal income tax return<\/li>\n<li>be a Canadian resident for income tax purposes, and<\/li>\n<li>be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once\u00a0<strong>all<\/strong>\u00a0these conditions are met, an individual may apply for the CDB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Much Are the Benefits?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CDB provides a maximum benefit of $2,400 per year (or $200 per month) for low-income individuals.<\/p>\n<p>To receive the full benefit:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>your<strong>\u00a0adjusted family net income (AFNI)<\/strong>\u00a0for the prior year must be\u00a0<strong>$23,000 or less<\/strong><sup>2<\/sup>, or<\/li>\n<li><strong>$32,500 or less<\/strong><sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0if you have a spouse or common-law partner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your income exceeds these thresholds, the monthly benefit is reduced by $0.20 for every extra dollar of income\u00a0<sup>3<\/sup>. If the annual benefit is less than $240 (or $20 per month), it will be paid as a lump-sum once a year instead of monthly.<br \/>\nThe benefit is indexed to inflation,\u00a0<strong>non-taxable<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>does not affect eligibility for other federal benefits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Apply<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications are now open. If you are already approved for the DTC, you may receive a letter from Service Canada with instructions.<br \/>\nIf you don\u2019t receive a letter, but believe you may be eligible, you can still apply:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>online<\/strong>\u00a0through the Service Canada website<\/li>\n<li><strong>by phone<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>in person<\/strong>\u00a0in a Service Canada office, or<\/li>\n<li><strong>by mail<\/strong>, using the completed \u201cApplication for the Disability Benefit\u201d form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Service Canada aims to process applications within 28 calendar days. If a legal representative applies on your behalf, the timeline may extend to 49 days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why It Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CDB marks a step in addressing financial insecurity among Canadians with disabilities.
