In his latest annual letter\u2014eagerly awaited each year by many investors for its sage wisdom\u2014Buffett addressed the topic directly:<\/p><blockquote><p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cDespite what some commentators currently view as an extraordinary cash position at Berkshire, the great majority of your money remains in equities. That preference won\u2019t change.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><h4 style=\"text-align: justify\">So, What\u2019s Happening?<\/h4><p style=\"text-align: justify\">From a strategic portfolio management perspective, Berkshire\u2019s growing cash position isn\u2019t surprising. Here\u2019s why:<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Rebalancing<\/strong> \u2014 Berkshire\u2019s cash reserves grew significantly last year, largely due to profit-taking in a buoyant stock market. Notably, Buffett trimmed Berkshire\u2019s holdings in Apple\u2014its largest common stock position both before and after the trim\u2014at a time when technology stocks were driving market gains.<sup>1<\/sup> He also reduced the company\u2019s stake in Bank of America when U.S. financials were performing well.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\">Beyond simply following the principle of <em>\u201cbuy low and sell high,<\/em>\u201d this move highlights the importance of portfolio rebalancing. If the value of one stock has risen so significantly that it dominates your holdings, it may be an opportune time to consider selling to restore balance. This principle also applies to asset allocation, ensuring the right mix of risk and expected return to achieve long-term goals.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Selectivity<\/strong> \u2014 With the bull market of recent years pushing markets to record highs, many stocks have appeared overvalued by historical standards. Buffett acknowledged this challenge: \u201c<em>\u2026 very infrequently we find ourselves knee-deep in opportunities.<\/em>\u201d His classic value-investing approach\u2014focused on buying quality companies at attractive prices\u2014has made it more difficult to deploy capital. However, this hasn\u2019t stopped him entirely. In Q4 2024, Berkshire did add to five existing publicly-traded equity positions and initiated a new stake in Constellation Brands after its share price pulled back.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\">In bull markets, many stocks perform well regardless of their fundamentals. But as we enter a period of slower growth and rising geopolitical uncertainty, thoughtful security selection becomes increasingly critical.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Other Factors: No Dividends, No <\/strong><strong>Buybacks\u2014For Now<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3281 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/towerwealthadvisory\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2025\/03\/Untitled-8-279x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"300\" \/><\/strong><br \/>Buffett has long chosen to deploy Berkshire\u2019s earnings into new investments rather than pay dividends, \u201cthereby electing to reinvest rather than consume,\u201d taking advantage of the \u201c<em>magic of long-term compounding<\/em>.\u201d This strategy has contributed to Berkshire\u2019s growth, including a market capitalization that surpassed a trillion dollars in 2024.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\">Berkshire has also halted share buybacks for two consecutive quarters. This suggests Buffett does not currently see Berkshire\u2019s stock as undervalued\u2014a notable stance from someone known for buying back shares when they appear attractively priced.<\/p><h4><strong>During Uncertain Times: Revisiting Buffett\u2019s Enduring Wisdom<\/strong><\/h4><p style=\"text-align: justify\">Given the current economic and market backdrop, it\u2019s worth repeating that long-term investing requires patience, discipline and perseverance to navigate difficult times. Periods of volatility and economic uncertainty\u2014as well as new challenges\u2014are inevitable, but history reminds us that we will get through these periods and emerge stronger over the long term.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify\">During difficult times, it may be tempting to react to short-term uncertainty, but Buffett\u2019s approach reminds us that resilience and a longer-term mindset can be essential for successful, long-term investing. Consider his bold move to inspire confidence during the Great Financial Crisis. In October 2008, during a sustained<br \/>bear market when U.S. equity markets had already fallen 30 percent, he penned an op-ed titled \u201c<strong><em>Buy American. I Am.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<sup>3<\/sup> At the time, his message may have appeared misguided, as the S&amp;P 500 would go on to drop another 20 percent before bottoming.
