If Trump\u2019s strategy of peace through strength works, the result could be a new peace dividend.<\/h3>

The New Great Game\u00a0has begun, and Rudyard Kipling gave us the metaphor. In Kipling\u2019s 1901 novel\u00a0Kim<\/em>, a boy stumbles into a shadow struggle between empires over maps, passes, and buffer states; in 2026, the board has shifted to sea lanes, data centers, energy chokepoints, and payment rails, but the contest is no less real. \u201cHere begins the Great Game,\u201d Mahbub Ali tells Kim, and for the first time in a generation American policy is being framed with the same clarity of stakes. What is ending is Pax Americana, the era in which the United States underwrote global security as a subsidized public good while others built their comfort on top of it. What stands before us now is not managed decline, but the possibility of a harder, brighter future: capital pushed back into productive use, economic sovereignty restored, and a peace dividend that could rhyme with the fall of the Berlin Wall.<\/p>

This new contest has two principal players: the United States and China. London, Moscow, and Brussels still matter, but they no longer write the script. Anyone who has read Niccol\u00f2 Machiavelli\u2019s\u00a0The Prince<\/em>\u00a0will recognize that Trump\u2019s provocations are often tactic, not tantrum: shocks meant to expose complacency and reorder the field. The deeper problem was structural, as John Maynard Keynes warned at Bretton Woods; no order can endure if one creditor nation is expected to guarantee security, absorb demand, and supply the reserve currency while others dismantle their militaries, outsource their energy, and moralize about American politics.<\/p>

Trump\u2019s \u201cAmerica First\u201d turn is best understood as a belated recognition that this path was unsustainable. The sea change in policy orientation that his election wrought marked a return to a series of older American traditions: Alexander Hamilton\u2019s insistence on industrial strength and finance, Henry Clay\u2019s American System of internal development, and James Monroe\u2019s conviction that outside powers should not dictate the destiny of the Western Hemisphere. Updated for the 21st century, that means rebuilding productive capacity at home, securing the hemisphere as an energy and resource fortress, and ensuring that no rival \u2014 China above all \u2014 can dominate the critical inputs or chokepoints of the global economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\u2019s characterization, \u201cde-risk, not decouple,\u201d captures the logic. America is not trying to wall itself off from the world; it is trying to end a pattern of one-sided dependence that is ripe for Beijing to weaponize. De-risking means diversifying energy sources and routes, reshoring or friend-shoring critical production, and building systems that give the United States and its allies options when China turns interdependence into leverage.<\/p>

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is where this doctrine becomes visible in hard power. The old thesis was simple: America guarantees open, secure sea lanes, and everyone else plans on that guarantee as if it were a law of nature. Trump\u2019s move is the antithesis of that tired consensus: he withholds the guarantee at the moment of maximum stress. His blunt message to Europe \u2014 you need the oil more than we do, so you go and take it \u2014 makes clear that U.S. power is a contingent choice, not an immutable constant. This is Trump\u2019s Hegel strategy at Hormuz. By refusing the easy synthesis \u2014 swift strikes, reopened traffic, everyone back to sleep \u2014 he forces the contradiction to the surface. Europe discovers that its climate-first, security-last model cannot function when the molecules stop moving. The synthesis, if it comes, is a reordered alliance in which access to U.S. protection and U.S.-secured flows is conditioned on real contributions \u2014 not assumed as a birthright.<\/p>

Against that backdrop, Iran is less a distraction than a hinge. The strikes on its nuclear and missile infrastructure were never about fantasy \u201cregime change by airstrike\u201d but about halting Tehran\u2019s march to a bomb and exposing the regime\u2019s vulnerabilities. The same constrained playbook now applies to Iran: fracture the regime from within, but do not create another Iraq. Iran is the immediate theater; China is the real audience. That audience matters because Iran has long sat at the junction of empire, oil, and strategy. In the original Great Game, Persia was the hinge between British sea power and Russian land power; later, it became a pillar of the City of London\u2019s energy empire, fueling Churchill\u2019s navy and enriching the Square Mile. Trump\u2019s innovation is to say that the decisive map is no longer the imperial interior alone, but the maritime edges. What matters now is who can turn the valves.<\/p>

Trump\u2019s action at Hormuz should be read as the first open shot in a U.S.\u2013China contest and as the return of Alfred Thayer Mahan. It was also a demonstration of the American military machine: carrier groups, long-range strikes, logistics, intelligence fusion, command-and-control, and sea power brought together at the world\u2019s most strategic chokepoint. The message to Beijing was not subtle: the United States still retains unmatched capacity to control the arteries of world commerce. That is what makes the Malacca Dilemma urgent again. If Washington can squeeze one vital artery, Beijing must ask whether it could someday threaten another.<\/p>

Kipling\u2019s line in\u00a0Kim<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 \u201cThere is no sin so great as ignorance. Remember this.\u201d \u2014 lands differently now. Keynes identified the contradictions of the old order at Bretton Woods, but elites ignored them for decades. That luxury is gone. Through Trump, America has introduced the New Great Game and, with it, the beginning of a new era. The alliances that emerge from the conflict in Iran \u2014 linking the United States more tightly with Japan, South Korea, and the maritime powers of the Pacific \u2014 could become the template for the next strategic order.<\/p>

The New Great Game will reward those who understand what the end of Pax Americana means economically, commercially, and strategically. The old order allowed too many countries to outsource their own security and underinvest in their own domestic production. The new one will favor nations and investors that grasp the shift early: toward energy sovereignty, maritime strength, productive capital, and a modernized dollar system that others still trust. If Trump\u2019s strategy of peace through strength works \u2014 coercion without occupation, deterrence without endless crusades \u2014 the result could be a new peace dividend: lower geopolitical risk, stronger and more self-reliant allies, rising living standards, and a late 2020s defined less by managed decline than by the opening of a new American golden era.<\/p>
