Technology leaders are committing billions of dollars to data centres, semiconductors, and AI-native platforms, and that pace of investment shows no signs of slowing.

We view AI capital expenditure (capex) as one of the most durable structural themes in today’s investment landscape. Here is why—and what it means for how we are positioning long-term portfolios.

The scale of the investment cycle

The numbers are significant. Major technology firms have publicly committed to multi-year AI infrastructure programs worth tens of billions of dollars each. Collectively, these commitments represent one of the largest coordinated private-sector investment cycles in recent memory—comparable, in some respects, to the build-out of internet infrastructure in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but with meaningfully different economics and a much clearer near-term demand signal.

Unlike speculative infrastructure build-outs, today’s AI capex is largely demand-driven. Enterprises across sectors—from financial services and healthcare to logistics and manufacturing—are actively deploying AI tools, creating sustained demand for the underlying infrastructure.

An economic multiplier beyond the tech sector

This is not simply a technology story. Large-scale infrastructure investment creates a broad economic multiplier. Data centre construction drives demand for industrial real estate, power generation and grid infrastructure, cooling systems, and construction services. Semiconductor manufacturing supports specialized materials, advanced logistics, and skilled employment. AI software platforms stimulate growth in professional services, consulting, and adjacent technology businesses.

The result is a theme with reach well beyond the technology sector itself—one that touches industrials, utilities, real estate, and human capital in ways that are easy to underestimate.

How we are thinking about this in portfolios

We are actively integrating AI capex as a structural theme into long-term portfolio positioning. That does not mean chasing the most prominent AI names at any price—valuations matter, and discipline remains essential. It means identifying the full value chain of beneficiaries: the infrastructure providers, the energy and industrial companies enabling the build-out, and the platform businesses positioned to capture durable revenue from enterprise AI adoption.

We also recognize that investment cycles of this magnitude create winners and losers. Companies that cannot adapt to AI-driven productivity improvements—or that face competitive disruption from AI-enabled competitors—carry meaningful long-term risk.

Our approach is deliberate, diversified, and grounded in the fundamentals. The AI investment cycle is real, it is large, and we believe it will continue to shape the investment landscape for years to come. We welcome the opportunity to discuss how this theme is reflected in your portfolio.

This commentary is for informational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice.
