Her bonus is paid every March and her pension is worth more with every year she stays. One offer pays more, keeps the benefits she knows, and continues the path she has built. The other pays less, comes with equity, gives her back some control over her week, and is the job she actually wants. Which is the better financial decision?

Salary cannot answer that. A career decision is rarely just a salary decision. Its consequences spread across bonuses, equity, benefits, pensions, tax, insurance and the timing of everything she was already planning, and the question underneath all of it is not financial at all.

That is what career transition financial planning is for: not to make the decision, but to make the trade-offs visible before you resign, before you sign, and before you accept a severance package. It comes down to knowing three things. What you are leaving behind, and when. What the new package is worth. And how much room your household has while the change settles.

What are you leaving behind, and when?

When the next role is exciting, it is natural to stop looking closely at the current one. Before a client leaves a role, we walk through what happens to:

Bonus eligibility and the payment date

Unvested equity or stock options, and any window on vested ones

Pension, group RRSP and employer matching

Health and dental coverage, and when it ends

Disability and life insurance

Deferred compensation and unused vacation

Non-compete, non-solicit and repayment clauses

Timing matters as much as value. Leaving three weeks before a vesting date or a bonus payout can produce a materially different result from leaving three weeks after. That is not a reason to stay in a job you want out of to collect every dollar. It is a reason to know what the exit costs.

The director with a March bonus and two November offers is not only deciding whether to leave. She is deciding whether leaving forfeits a year’s bonus, and whether either offer will replace it. With the dates in view, she can choose her timing.

Disability coverage is easy to overlook during a transition, particularly when leaving an employer plan. If the next role does not replace it, or there is no next employer because you are working for yourself, the coverage gap belongs in the transition plan.

What happens to your pension when you leave a job?

Retirement benefits are easy to set aside in a transition because they feel less urgent than where you will work next, and they are often among the most consequential pieces of it. What happens depends on the kind of plan. A defined benefit pension is a promise of income. A defined contribution plan is a pot of money you are responsible for. (Source: Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario, about pensions) A group RRSP works much the same way. Executive arrangements have their own terms and need to be read, not assumed.

When employment ends, each of those comes with a decision. The form will have a deadline. The deadline should not be what makes the decision. Someone leaving at forty to build a company may prioritize flexibility; someone leaving a twenty-year role at fifty-eight, not by choice, may prioritize predictability and control.

Moving a pension or group RRSP out of a former employer’s plan is work we do often, and the transfer is only part of it. The decision before it, what that money is now for, is the part worth the most time. The pension decision is not separate from the career decision. It is one of the things the career decision changes.

What is the new package worth?

Salary is the easiest number to see, so it tends to dominate job comparisons. The full package is wider: base, bonus and the conditions attached to it, equity and its vesting schedule, pension or matching, coverage, vacation, working arrangements, the realistic path to advancement, and the terms that apply after you leave. Two offers can sit twenty thousand dollars apart in salary and much further apart in everything else, and not always in the direction the salary suggests.

Time has a price even though it never appears on a pay stub. A role that returns ten hours a week can reduce childcare costs, remove a commute, let a spouse take on more, or create room to build something of your own. It is natural to assume every move should maximize compensation. That is not the same as maximizing freedom. Some of the most valuable parts of an offer never show up on a T4.

A career move is a comparison between two lives, not two incomes.

How should you evaluate stock options in a job offer?

Equity makes an offer look dramatically more attractive and the comparison much harder, because the headline number is rarely the real one. Financial planning around stock options starts with four questions, none of them about the share price:

What do you own today?

When will you own the rest?

What conditions are attached?

What happens to it if you leave?

The answers live in the award terms, not the offer letter, and they differ between a bank’s share units, a startup’s options and a public company’s performance grant.

Then there is concentration. If your salary, your career and a growing share of your net worth all depend on the same company, the upside is real and so is the exposure. That does not make equity good or bad. It makes context decisive: the same grant can be exactly right for one household and the wrong bet for another, depending on what else they own and how the tax falls when they sell.

Leaving a corporate job for self-employment: how much runway do you need?

Enough to give the new venture time to work. A transition can be affordable over five years and still uncomfortable over the next six months. You may have enough money. What you need is enough liquidity, and those are not the same thing. Cash is often treated as money that is not working hard enough. During a transition its job is to keep you from making a decision before you are ready, which is useful work.

Leaving a corporate job to start a business is where this changes most, because you take on so much at once. Payroll arrived, tax was withheld, benefits and retirement contributions ran automatically. Now that infrastructure is yours to build, just as income becomes less predictable, and the question shifts from whether the business can succeed to how long you can give it the chance. That is where personal and business planning meet: what the household needs each month, what the business needs, and how many months of runway would let you decide calmly.

We help clients at this stage decide how to structure the business and set up the accounts around it, usually starting by separating business and household money so the runway stays visible.

What if the transition was not your choice?

You may have more room than it feels like in the first week. Losing a job compresses time. The instinct is to replace the income, the title and the certainty immediately, and sometimes that is right. Often it is simply the first reaction to having control taken away.

In our experience, the package you are handed is often a starting point rather than a final offer, and people do not always realize they can ask. Many people sign quickly, because the conversation was difficult and they want it behind them.

We have negotiated a termination package on a client’s behalf, and the most valuable thing we did was slow the decision down long enough to understand the numbers. We usually suggest having an employment lawyer review the agreement, along with someone who understands your whole financial picture, because severance touches tax, benefits and pension at the same time, and a single line item rarely shows that.

Then add up what is actually available: severance, savings, benefits that continue for a period, retirement assets, and flexibility in the household budget that was invisible while income arrived on schedule. A person who believes they have four weeks makes different choices from one who discovers they have nine months. The second person can consult, retrain, start something, take time, or accept a role that pays less and fits better. Losing a job is never easy. Knowing what is available turns it into a set of real choices.

The question underneath the financial question

Most of the career questions we hear become some version of:

Can I leave?

Can I take the pay cut?

Can we manage on one income?

What if this takes a year?

People want a number. What they are asking is whether they are going to be okay if they choose differently. And underneath that: is this actually the life I want?

A spreadsheet can tell you whether a scenario works. It cannot tell you whether the scenario is worth wanting. Earning less might move retirement back two years and give you every Friday with your children. Money cannot decide which life is better. It can tell you precisely what each one requires, and that is enough to make a much better decision.

The director with two offers will not find the answer in either salary. She will find it in what March costs her, what the equity is worth once she has read the terms, how many months the household could carry the smaller number, and which of the two lives she wants. The first three questions are our job. The last one was always hers.

That is the work: understanding what a career decision means for your whole financial life, so you can make it with clarity and confidence. Money should create choices, not quietly take them away.

Considering a career change? Start the conversation before you sign.

A career move is rarely just a salary decision.
