There are additional medications and ovulation tests, which increase the overall cost of the treatment.\u00a0 We underwent three rounds of IUI with no success.<\/p>\n<p>Our next step was to consider in-vitro fertilization (IVF).\u00a0 The costs associated with this treatment are significantly higher, due to the additional steps required.\u00a0 At the time, a round of IVF came at a cost of $7,000 &#8211; $10,000.\u00a0 This did not include the cost of any medications needed as part of the process, or any additional storage fees related to oocyte or embryo cryopreservation.<\/p>\n<p>My husband and I decided to forgo IVF and pursue open adoption.\u00a0 We made this choice because we didn\u2019t have a clear understanding of why we were unable to conceive and felt that IVF might not work.\u00a0 When we went through the initial process of understanding adoption further, we also realized that the legal costs associated with adoption were quite similar to the costs of a round of IVF.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m mentioning the costs, as they do have an impact.\u00a0 Many start the process of pursuing treatment options and fail to consider them.\u00a0 I\u2019ve witnessed people deplete their savings, in some cases against their partner\u2019s wishes, in an attempt to conceive.<\/p>\n<p>What you want to pursue is a deeply personal choice.\u00a0 If you are making these decisions, either with or without a partner, consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Treatment Options: What treatments are you willing to try?\u00a0 What are the physical, financial, and emotional costs of each option?\u00a0 How much time and energy are you willing to put into the process?<\/li>\n<li>Financial Resources: What savings do you have to commit to your treatment options?\u00a0 What benefits do you have and what can be covered?\u00a0 When it comes to fertility treatment in Canada, you can write off some expenses.\u00a0 You can search for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/lines-33099-33199-eligible-medical-expenses-you-claim-on-your-tax-return.html#mdcl_xpns\">eligible medical expenses you can claim on your tax return<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/topics\/about-your-tax-return\/tax-return\/completing-a-tax-return\/deductions-credits-expenses\/line-31300-adoption-expenses.html\">eligible adoption expenses<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Emotional Support: How will you receive support throughout the process?\u00a0 Are there any trusted people that you can share your experiences with?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following what happened to coincidentally be a 9-month adoption process, in the summer of 2013, we held our son Aidan in our arms.\u00a0 We had many periods of doubt, where we wondered if we had made the right decision.\u00a0 Looking back, we can\u2019t imagine growing our family any other way.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1361 \" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2023\/11\/Karen-baby.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2023\/11\/Karen-baby.jpg 507w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2023\/11\/Karen-baby-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is estimated that, on average, one in six Canadians experience infertility.\u00a0 I am one of those Canadians and wanted to share my story.<br \/>\nIt comes as no surprise that I am a planner in all aspects of my life, and when I knew I wanted to start a family, the first thing I did was get a physical.\u00a0 I wanted to ensure that I had no health issues prior to trying to conceive.\u00a0 Following the all-clear, and customary 12 months of trying to conceive, we started to investigate why we had been unsuccessful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":181,"featured_media":1364,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_oasis_is_in_workflow":0,"_oasis_original":0,"_oasis_task_priority":"","_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1351","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-women-in-the-know"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
