The scenarios referenced were from our personal experiences either directly, or though friends and family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario #1<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>AI-driven phishing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scammers use artificial intelligence to create highly convincing phishing emails that lack the usual grammatical errors, making them harder to detect.<\/p>\n<p>One of our team members received the following email:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1616 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2024\/08\/Phone-Email.png\" alt=\"Phone Email\" width=\"400\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2024\/08\/Phone-Email.png 698w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2024\/08\/Phone-Email-170x300.png 170w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2024\/08\/Phone-Email-580x1024.png 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Indicators that this was a phishing attempt included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Words such as \u201ccrucial\u201d and \u201cessential\u201d were used to highlight its importance and create a sense of urgency.<\/li>\n<li>The hyperlink in the first paragraph was in a different font than the rest of the email.<\/li>\n<li>If you search for www.cpp.ca, you will see it\u2019s for insurance, not the Canada Pension Plan.<\/li>\n<li>They reference that the file is compatible with computers only. This is a clear attempt to gain access to the recipient\u2019s computer and gain access to sensitive personal information.<\/li>\n<li>Checking the sender\u2019s details shows that it\u2019s not coming from a corporate agency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1615 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2024\/08\/Iphone-Contact.png\" alt=\"iphone Contact\" width=\"400\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2024\/08\/Iphone-Contact.png 616w, https:\/\/advisor.wellington-altus.ca\/wagner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2024\/08\/Iphone-Contact-288x300.png 288w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario #2 \u2013 Email bombing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent months, a scam involving Aeroplan points surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/aeroplan-hack-emails-1.7141173\">CBC article <\/a>on one victim\u2019s experience, they highlighted the use of email bombing to successfully access the victim\u2019s points. Email bombing is a technique used by hackers to overwhelm someone&#8217;s inbox with useless emails in a short period of time.\u00a0 The goal is to take your focus away from the one message you should be paying attention to.<\/p>\n<p>The fraudsters exploited weaknesses in account security to steal points from members, and the notification of points used was missed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario #3 \u2013 The Old-Fashioned Approach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fraudsters continue targeting vulnerable populations through mail. Fraudsters send official-looking letters that mimic correspondence from legitimate institutions, directing recipients to call a phone number or visit a fraudulent website. They use social engineering tactics to include personal details that make the letter seem more legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>A family member recently received a letter mentioning an estate settlement. Whether it&#8217;s an email, phone call, or text message, don&#8217;t trust it at face value.<\/p>\n<p>If you receive a suspicious message from what appears to be a legitimate company, contact them using a verified phone number or email address from their official website, not the contact information provided in the message\u200b.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Using multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts by requiring more than just a password. This typically involves a second step such as a text message code, authenticator app, or biometric verification. Enable MFA on all your important accounts, including email, banking, and social media. \u200b<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Have a conversation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure about a request that you\u2019ve received, speak with a friend, family member, or advisor. Sometimes, just getting a second opinion can be enough to spot a red flag. What might seem plausible to you in the moment could appear suspicious to someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Scammers often prey on emotions, such as fear, excitement, or urgency, which can cloud judgment. A trusted person can also provide an objective perspective on the situation.<\/p>\n<p>In these uncertain times, safeguarding yourself against evolving scams is crucial.
