VOLATILITY: A COMMON FEATURE OF THE MARKETS

HT-WA ARTICLE

Even the Good Years Have Down Times

While many aspects of investing in the equity markets may seem unpredictable, one constant remains: volatility. Just how common are market fluctuations? Even in years when the S&P/TSX Composite Index has performed well, we should expect substantial volatility. Over the past 40 years, despite average annual performance of more than 6 percent, the average intra-year decline was -15 percent (see graph below for performance since 2005), with corrections of 10 percent or more occurring more than half of the time and corrections of 15
percent or more occurring one-third of the time! Successful investing involves being prepared for both the market ups and inevitable downs. While it’s never easy to see portfolio values decline during temporary down periods, patience and perspective are important. Don’t let short-term fluctuations disrupt long-term financial plans.

What Jevons Paradox Tells Us About the World Around Us

In 1865, British economist William Jevons observed a seeming paradox with the rise of the steam engine and its effect on coal consumption. As coal use became more efficient, he expected total coal consumption to decline. Instead, it surged. This observation remains relevant to the world around us.

Are the Bond Markets Sending a Signal?

Many market observers have recently turned their attention to the fixed-income markets, as long-term government bond yields have risen to levels not observed in more than two decades. By the end of May, 10-year and 30-year U.S. Treasury yields had risen to levels last seen before the 2008 crisis. Japan’s long-end bond yields also surged to multi-decade highs. Even in Canada, government bond yields hit multi-year highs.
