It’s a new year, meaning it’s time to start fresh and curate a list of new books for 2023! I’m not sure about you, but depending on my mood, my book preferences change. I’ve been working on my own list of book finds, and I thought I would share some of my favourite reads from 2022 and the ones that have been recently suggested to me for 2023! For all of you A-types, I’ve organized these books by categories so you can easily skip to the ones you want to peruse… you’re welcome! If you read to the end, you’ll get three bonus book recommendations from my good friend and my December F&F feature woman, Kristin Colangelo.
Books I Read and Learned Something
Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker
This one is a fascinating read about the drinking culture, the process of quitting and the “system” of AA. It dives into Alcoholics Anonymous and the author’s belief that AA is a system that chastises one for being “bad” because of their drinking, when there’s likely another reason behind it. It put some ideas into perspective and made me think – both of which I appreciate!
The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor
How does one truly shift their mindset? Well, this book has one answer—by focusing on the good. Supported by scientific evidence, Achor’s book dives deep into this question and answer, equipping readers with the tools needed to achieve that coveted happiness we dream of. As a society, we have been conditioned that if we succeed, we will achieve happiness…. But what if being happy could actually help us to succeed?
Books That Are Laugh Out Loud and Satisfying
Not That Likeable…and Other Stories I Told Myself by Amanda Hamilton
Not That Likeable is a fantastic book written by my good friend Amanda Hamilton. Between its pages, it chronicles her upbringing and what most people think but are too afraid to say… in all those cringy teenage moments. Most importantly, it illustrates the life lessons she has learned throughout it all. I haven’t finished it yet, but I should soon because I can barely put it down!
Books That Are Interesting and Stimulating (and Derived From What I Do)
Don’t Leave a Mess by Sandy Pollack
Sandy worked with my father for years, and she is an incredible woman. Most recently, she has penned a book on how to prepare for when you pass so that you can leave a lasting legacy for those you love—easily and without paying everything to the tax man. I haven’t finished it, but it has examples and personal stories that keep this read light and informative… all while keeping more money in you and your family’s pockets.
The Canadian’s Guide to Personal Finance for Singles by Bryan Borzykowski and Me!
Well, a book round-up wouldn’t be complete without my own book! Finance for Singles is an easy read, has a touch of wit and gives you tangible tips for saving, investing and understanding how to manage debt. It’s catered toward bereaved, divorced and chosen singles, but I’ve received lots of great feedback from happily coupled-up readers showing that it speaks to singles and couples alike. If you manage your own finances and want a deeper dive into how to do so more efficiently, this is great for you!
Kristin’s Favourite Book Recommendations
Five Little Indians by Michelle Good
Although this is a fictional book, the author does an incredible job of educating others about residential schools and the effects that they have had on generations. It follows the lives of five young adults as they grapple with life in Vancouver with no family, money, or support. An insightful yet devastating read.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins-Reid
This is one of Kristin’s favourite reads, and she’s not the only one, as this book topped bestseller lists everywhere. This is a light read about old Hollywood and former star, Evelyn Hugo. Taylor Jenkins-Reid also happens to be one of Kristin’s favourite authors, with Daisy Jones & the Six, Maybe in Another Life and Carrie Soto is Back under her belt.
Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaouad
This one is an incredible memoir of Suleika Jaouad and her journey to reclaim her life after surviving cancer. If you’re looking for a book with themes of resiliency, survivorship, exploration and more, then you’re gonna love this one.
Now that we have gotten our list up and running, it’s time to get reading! Cue the cozy blanket, the hot cocoa, the crackling fire and the doggo on the lap. Let me know what books you end up finishing on my Wealth With Julie Instagram, and happy reading!
