Fun Vacay Spots to Visit This Summer

With summer around the corner, I’ve been dreaming about my next getaway. Whether you’re craving adventure, history, or a relaxing beach escape, there are many incredible destinations to explore. In this blog, I’m recapping some of the places I’ve loved and some that are on my must-visit list (or that I’ve heard great things about from friends). All of them offer something special! If you’re looking for a little travel inspiration, here are a few of my favourite spots to consider this summer.

The Azores: Europe’s Best-Kept Secret

Last summer, the family and I spent a bit of our summer in the Azores, and I can confidently say it was one of the most stunning places I’ve ever been. This little Portuguese archipelago has the feel of Hawaii, with a dash of European vibes. A big bonus is it has fewer tourists. I’ve posted many photos on my Wealth With Julie Instagram, but to sum it up, the landscapes are otherworldly—think dramatic cliffs, crater lakes, and thermal hot springs. If you love outdoor adventure, this place is a dream. Hike to the viewpoints in Sete Cidades, soak in the natural pools in Furnas, and drive along the rugged coastlines of São Miguel. It’s wild, peaceful, and absolutely worth the trip.

Italy: 2025 Will Be a Huge Year—Go Now!

Italy is always a good idea, but if you want to avoid the 2025 crowds, now is the time to go. The significance of the crowds comes from 2025 being the Jubilee Year in Rome and Vatican City, meaning millions of tourists will be flocking there for these special religious celebrations. While this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many who observe the holy year, the excitement will translate into higher prices, bigger crowds, and more.

For those of you who are planning for an Italy trip this summer, you might want to consider taking a more relaxed approach—explore Tuscany’s countryside, sip an Aperol Spritz in Venice before the fall crowds hit, or soak up the sun along the Amalfi Coast. If you do visit Rome, hit the must-sees early in the morning to beat the heat and crowds, and spend your afternoons in hidden piazzas with a gelato in hand.

Tulum: Sun, Sand & Slow Living

Tulum has changed a lot in the last decade, but it’s stayed one of my favourite spots for an easy, close, stylish escape. The beaches are as beautiful as ever, and the boutique hotels, wellness retreats, and incredible food scene make it feel like a true getaway. The best part? It’s a relatively easy flight from Calgary and the time change doesn’t throw you off too much.

Spend your days swimming in cenotes (naturally occurring water wells), indulging in fresh ceviche, and taking in the jungle-meets-beach energy that makes Tulum so unique. The architecture is also stunning here, and it’s fun to see the different styles of design that are integrated into structures.

Looking for a sustainably mindful stay? Eco-tourism has become a big part of the hospitality scene in Tulum, and supporting eco-friendly businesses helps preserve its magic.

The Dominican Republic: It’s Making a Comeback

The Dominican Republic has long been a go-to for all-inclusive resorts, but it’s quickly evolving into a destination that offers much more than just the traditional all-inclusive. I’ve heard lots of people talking about planning trips here—it honestly might be the next beach hot spot! The north coast, particularly Cabarete and Las Terrenas, is becoming a hotspot for boutique hotels, great Airbnbs, and a more laid-back, local feel. If you’re looking for an easy, warm-weather getaway but want something with a little more personality, this could be your spot. Plus, direct flights make it super accessible, which is always a win.

Hawaii: A Classic Go-To Warm Holiday

Hawaii has something for everyone, and each island has its own personality. Kauai is the place to go if you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a lush, tropical paradise—waterfalls, jungle hikes, and the stunning Nepali Coast make it feel almost untouched, and there are rarely droves of tourists there. Because of this, it can be the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation that you’re craving in a busy season of life.

If you’re looking for the classic Hawaii experience, Maui is an easy pick for lots of reasons. From beautiful beaches, to great resorts, and that signature Hawaiian charm, Maui is a classic choice for many young families, couples and more. It’s not quite as metropolitan as Oahu, but it definitely has more tourists than some of the smaller islands because of how it’s been developed. It’s easy to fly in and out from Western Canada, which is why a lot of Calgarians vacation here during the holidays and throughout the summer. Whether you want to snorkel in Molokini, drive the Road to Hana, or just unwind with a Mai Tai at sunset, it’s the kind of place that never gets old.

Where’s Next?

I’m getting excited about our future trips just writing this out, so I hope you feel inspired to make your list of travel spots. Whether you’re chasing adventure, wanting to immerse yourself in another culture, or settle into some pure R&R, these destinations have something for everyone. Happy planning!
