I know we’re already very much into autumn, which means pumpkin spice everything season is in full force! My team has taken to the cafés to hunt down the perfect pumpkin spice latte (PSL), and we’ve compiled our ratings and thoughts below. From more metropolitan coffee shops like Deville, to local favourites like The Lazy Loaf, we’ve tested several pumpkin-flavoured creations so you don’t have to (unless of course, you want to)! Let’s cut to the chase, shall we?
Good Earth (Bridgeland)
Rating: 6.7/10
Order: Iced PSL with Almond Milk
Notes: If you prefer your lattes on the less sweet side, this one’s for you. The nutmeg-forward flavour gives it a slightly bitter taste, though it does accommodate dairy-free options like almond milk. Expect more spice than pumpkin, making it a good choice for those who don’t want an overly sweet drink.
Alforno
Rating: 8/10
Order: Iced PSL with Chai Cold Foam
Notes: My team got this one half-sweet, which we would say is the right call. We really liked the amount of sweetness in this one, but think it could’ve been a little more pumpkin-y. However, it does have a chai cold foam on top, which gives it a nice flavour. It’s like the classic PSL but with a twist!
Mobsquad
Rating: 8.5/10
Order: Hot PSL with Oat Milk
Notes: Mobsquad might not be as well-known across the board, but they’re in our building, so you know we had to try theirs. If you prefer a pumpkin-forward latte, Mobsquad’s PSL is your go-to. It’s more pumpkin than spice, making it perfect for a chilly, rainy day. You won’t want to miss their amazing 21st floor views of the city either!
Deville (1st Street)
Rating: 8.7/10
Order: Golden PSL with Regular Milk
Notes: Deville’s PSL stands out with a unique aroma that smells like apple crisp. The flavours are rich and comforting, but beware—a large can be too much to handle if you’re not a die-hard pumpkin lover. A small size will give you just the right amount of fall coziness. They also have a White Chocolate PSL that you can try as well, which features very chai-like flavours. If you’re a chai lover, that one could be the right one for you.
Lazy Loaf
Rating: 9/10
Order: Iced PSL with Pumpkin Spiced Whipped Cream
Notes: Sweet at first, with a strong coffee aftertaste, this PSL has just the right amount of pumpkin. The spiced whipped cream adds a fun twist that’ll transport you to a rustic fall scene. Cue the pumpkins!
Starbucks
Rating: 9/10
Order: Hot PSL with almond milk
Notes: The classic! Starbucks nails the balance between pumpkin and spice every time. This is your quintessential “fall in a cup” experience. The great part of this one is if you’re on the go, you can almost always find it.
Good News (Inglewood)
Rating: 9.2/10
Order: PSL with Oat Milk
Notes: This PSL hits all the right notes—balanced, not too sweet or too spicy, with a perfect blend of pumpkin and spice. Plus, the cozy ambiance of this café makes it a great spot to unwind with your new favourite drink. The leaves are really showing off in the area right now, so head on down for a jaunt with your bike for the perfect autumn experience.
