BNN Bloomberg Live: Trade Talks, Inflation, and What It Means for Investors
Senior Portfolio Manager Maili Wong, CFA, CFP, FEA joined BNN Bloomberg Live to discuss the latest Canada-U.S. trade negotiations, inflation trends, interest rates, and corporate earnings.
You can watch the full interview here.
U.S. Canada Tariffs:
A key theme was uncertainty around the August 19 U.S. tariff deadline. Prime Minister Mark Carney continues to balance domestic priorities with the need to secure a workable trade agreement, while ongoing discussions include autos, steel, aluminum, dairy, alcohol restrictions, and the broader Canada-United States-Mexico-Agreement relationship.
Interest Rates and Inflation:
We also discussed the latest U.S. inflation data, which came in largely as expected.
Combined with softer employment data, this gives the U.S. Federal Reserve more flexibility to hold interest rates steady, which is supportive for markets and provides the Bank of Canada with greater room to make decisions based on Canada’s economic needs rather than simply reacting to U.S. policy.
Stock Markets and Valuations:
Despite concerns about valuations, corporate earnings remain remarkably strong.
While a small number of large technology companies contributed disproportionately to headline results, earnings growth has been broad-based across most sectors, reinforcing the view that markets are being supported by solid fundamentals.
Maili is a regular guest on BNN Bloomberg Television, where she provides her insights on market trends, economic developments, and what’s top of mind for investors.
You can catch her live interviews Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. PST (1:00 p.m. EST).
We hope you’ll have a chance to tune in and follow along.
